If you want to visit Oahu’s best beach, head to Lanikai Beach located in a residential area on the Windward side! This hidden gem is not connected to Kailua beach, so most tourists pass it up. Lanikai Beach is populated mostly by locals, the rich and famous and the occasional wedding at Sunset. This is a great place to swim with the Hawaiian Green Sea turtles because the reef protects it from the big Hawaiian surf. Bring plenty of sunblock as there is not much shade when on the beach. Parking on one of the many side streets is difficult, especially on the weekends, so make it easy on yourself and head over on a weekday. Be careful to leave room for the locals to get in and out of their driveways, do not block the bike lane and pay close attention to the NO PARKING signs. Don’t leave anything of value in the car. After you are parked, walk to one of the beach access paths and head toward the water. Lanikai is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods on Oahu so check out the beautiful homes on your short walk to the beach. For the perfect relaxing beach day, be sure to bring a blanket/beach mat, a camera, swimwear, food/hydration, a snorkel and mask, and something to float on. There are no bathrooms, no changing rooms/showers, no vendors and no lifeguards. There is plenty to see at the beach – the picturesque Mokulua Islands are about a mile off shore framed nicely by the bright blue water.
Water temperatures are generally 75 – 80 degrees F (24 – 26 C) so you can spend plenty of time in the water. It has the softest powdery clean white sand and makes this beach awesome. Lanikai Beach is regularly voted as one of the BEST BEACHES IN AMERICA and is the only beach in the USA that was voted as one of the best beaches in the world! Head over and see for yourself.
